march in Macy’s parade

Tuesday, July 17th, 2007

Islander Jennis Thomas and the marching band will be performing (and marching) in the 2008 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. And you can join the band! Here are some excerpts from the notice in the St. Pete Times:

I’m a 40-something living on Davis Islands with a fine job and great family, but through the years I never lost my love of performing in a marching band. My high school and college band days were great fun so when I heard about the chance to do it again, I jumped.

Now entering its 26th season, the Awesome Original St. Petersburg Second Time Arounders Marching Band is a 500-plus-member adult volunteer marching band. For 20 of the past 25 years, I’ve been the auxiliary/visual coordinator and also, more recently, drum major.

So imagine my reaction after marching in parades and festivals all over the United States and St. Patrick’s Day in Dublin, Ireland, when I found out we landed the big kahuna, an invite to the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, 2008! Yes, 2008; traveling with more than 600 people takes at least 18 months of planning, you know…

So, I want folks in South Tampa (and all over the Tampa Bay area) to know that we would love to have new members join us for the season and the band trip of a lifetime…

Check out the Awesome Original St. Petersburg Second Time Arounders Marching Band website, learn more about the trip to New York City, and then sign up to join the band!

Got Dock Space?

Monday, July 16th, 2007

Tom Callahan needs a place to dock his sailboat:

Do you or any of your neighbors have an empty dock? I live on Bayshore and have a sailboat that I would like to keep close. I have a beautiful 34 ft sailboat that needs a dock with 4.5 ft draft and access to deep water. Surely there are empty docks on Davis Island that someone would like to rent. Call Tom Callahan at 813.731.4629. Rent and usage of boat is negotiable.

Are you having a yard sale? Do you have an announcement to make? All you have to do is use our contact form, and you could see your announcement here on Davis Islands Today.

DI resident crashes in Clearwater

Friday, July 6th, 2007

From Tampa Bay Newspapers

Motorist fleeing police destroys three parked cars
The predawn traffic stop of a Tampa man on June 28 resulted in the destruction of three vehicles parked in the driveway of a Clearwater woman’s home. Police allege that Walter Johnson, 48, of the Davis Islands section of Tampa lost control of his Chevrolet Camaro convertible while speeding away from a traffic stop and destroyed not only Ruth Knight’s 1993 teal Jeep, but also a maroon Jeep and red minivan belonging to her two sons, which were parked in her driveway near the intersection of South Crest Avenue and Druid Road.

After police received a complaint of a suspicious white convertible cruising through the neighborhood, Officer Mark Beaudette pulled Johnson over near the intersection of Missouri Avenue and Druid. Johnson said he was in the area to visit a sick friend and allegedly used the name of his brother, who didn’t have any arrest warrants. Beaudette was suspicious, but Johnson took off before he could check further.

Beaudette did not give chase but radioed ahead to another officer, who spotted the Camaro just before it crashed, about 10 blocks from the initial stop. Johnson was thrown from the car and was subsequently flown to Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg, where he was reported to be in serious condition.
