Old Hyde Park Kitchen Tour Features History with a Modern Edge

Residents of one of Tampa’s most historic neighborhoods are offering the chance to view their homes from a most unique perspective.

The Old Hyde Park Kitchen Tour, scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 8, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., features the kitchens and gardens of 8 homes along Edison Avenue and surrounding streets, including a beautiful home on Bayshore Blvd.

Visitors will find an interesting blend of the old and new as they tour the ground floors of these homes, which were all built between 1915 and 1925. While the kitchens have been updated with the most modern appliances, they still retain their historic charm, according to Mary Esther Parker, a member of Hyde Park Preservation, Inc. which is organizing the event.

“The kitchen tour is a great way to get ideas for your own kitchen and garden,” suggests event chairperson Deana Buckley. “In today’s economy people are doing more entertaining and dining at home. Making your kitchen special makes that time more enjoyable.”

To add an extra touch of elegance to the tour, local companies such as Pottery Barn Kids, Magnolia and some private interior decorating firms have provided their own decorative treatments to the kitchens.

In addition, each house will have tour guides to show visitors around and talk about its history.

Old Hyde Park is bounded by Swann Avenue , Bayshore Boulevard , Rome Avenue, and Brevard Avenue. The event’s proceeds will be used to maintain and enhance the historic neighborhood. Some of the funds may be used to support the annual Christmas lights along South Boulevard.

Ticket prices are $15 in advance. To purchase advance tickets, send a check payable to Hyde Park Preservation, Inc., c/o Deana Buckley 709 South Boulevard , Tampa, FL 33606 .

Tickets at $20 each will also be available the day of the event on Swann Avenue in the Wilson Middle School parking lot. There will be parking there as well. Sorry – no credit cards, only checks and cash will be accepted.

Ticket holders will receive brochures listing the homes available for viewing and their locations. They’ll also receive wristbands, which will provide admission into the houses.

Refreshment stands hosted by the neighborhood kids will be provided on the walk.
